MOTW: Kettlebell Overhead High Knees

These are a great full body movement that helps build balance and coordination - while strengthening your core and shoulder joints.

To do these, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and in 1 hand, press and hold a kettlebell overhead.

Tighten your core to stay balanced on one leg, then lift your opposite knee up as high as you can before stepping back down.

TOTW: How Hangovers impact recovery

A hangover refers to a set of symptoms that occur as a consequence of drinking too much. Typical symptoms include fatigue, weakness, thirst, headache, muscle aches, nausea, stomach pain, vertigo, sensitivity to light and sound, anxiety, irritability, sweating, and increased blood pressure.

Hangovers can feel pretty awful, but one of the worst things about them is how much they prolong recovery. Below I’ve listed 6 of the ways that alcohol consumption (and as a result, hangovers) mess with your bodies ability to recovery.

  1. Dehydration: Alcohol makes you pee more, so you lose water and feel thirsty, get dizzy, and can experience headaches.

  2. Stomach Problems: Alcohol irritates your stomach lining, making you feel nauseous and possibly vomit.

  3. Low Blood Sugar: While your liver is processing alcohol, it stops releasing glucose. As a result, your blood sugar level can drop quickly, putting you at risk for low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)’

  4. Bad Sleep: It’s very hard to get into REM sleep when you’ve been drinking a lot. REM is where most recovery takes place, so you don’t rest or recover very well.

  5. Toxins: Your body breaks down alcohol into a toxic substance called acetaldehyde, which makes you feel sick as your body disposes of it.

  6. Inflammation: Alcohol can make your body react like it’s fighting off a sickness, causing aches and tiredness across the body.
